Ted & Anna:
I am following up my phone conversation yesterday with James Spry, the owner of a single-family residence as noted
above. He has submitted a building permit application to our office for a basement finish at his existing home which was
originally built in 2009. This home has an existing septic system and I have told James that he needs to contact your
office about capacity/size of the existing OWTS to see if any alterations may be required due to the current permit
application in which they are adding another bedroom (for a total of 5).
According to our records, the original septic system (Permit #4335) has a 1,000 gallon septic tank, a fluid dosing system
and sand filter bed. Sizing doesn't seem to match up with basic OWTS requirements, but the original septic system had
an Engineered system that was designed and reviewed by High Country Engineering.
Can you please advise us as to whether or not James needs to apply for a Septic System alteration permit for the existing
OWTS?
To ease communications and for everyone's convenience, I have copied James in on this email and his phone number is
(970) 230-0501.
Thanks for your assistance in this matter,
Dave Argo

All,
Based upon the design that we have reviewed, and the dimensions of the tank provided by the
homeowner, we do not believe that an OWTS permit will be required for this project (finishing an unfinished
basement, bring the total number of bedrooms to 5 from the current 4). The design documents provided by
High Country Engineering indicate that the sand filter was sized to accommodate 5 bedrooms, and the septic
tank volume meets current OWTS regulations for a 5 bedroom home (minimum 1,500 gallons). Please contact
us with further questions, or if you require further information.

I measured the inside of the tank at the top to be 96" long 70" wide 54" to the outlet pipe which calculates to 1570
gallons. I am looking for 5 bedrooms.
Thank you
Jay
