The building a 40'x80' steel building and is permitted as just a metal shell on a concrete slab. In anticipation of demising and conditioning at least one bay at a later date on a separate permit, we have insulated the foundation with blueboard per Matt's suggestion. The building is nearly complete but for the roof sheeting, and I would like to add R19 insulation to the roof concurrent with installation. This would constitute the requested modification that I need now on the shell permit. The shop is 20' to the eave with a 3/12 roof so it's roughly 25' to the peak, and has a 14' door in the bay that I would like to demise eventually. The goal at a later date would be to build a demising wall at the edge of the bay that extended up to a ceiling that would be just over the clearance of the garage door. This would give me a storage loft above and a lower -volume space below the loft and demised from the rest of the shop that I could condition more effectively and efficiently. The use would be just a workshop space to work on my personal cars, tractors and motorcycles. Any wall insulation necessary would go in at the time of demising, and 2 the underside of the loft could be additionally insulated at that time as well if necessary.. Putting this insulation in the roof now, though not required for a pure barn, would provide better thermal efficiency while the whole space is just a big barn, it would continue to do that in the unconditioned areas after the later demising, and ideally it will be helpful in achieving the required R values in the demised bay when the time comes. I have attached a quote from a company that custom makes the insulation cut to fit per the structural drawings and then it goes on over the purlins and under the roof panels. Per the insulation company, the detail on page 3 of the attached NAIMA brochure illustrates the installation detail. This is standard 6" R19 metal building insulation. It has a white vapor retarder laminated to it which is installed towards the interior of the building and serves as a thermal break. Please let me know if this is enough information to add this to the permit, or if you need further information or think I need a different R value or something like that. The insulation company will produce a layout drawing once I place the order, I would just like to make sure that I am barking up the right tree and not getting crossways with you guys before I place the order.
