Project No. 19-7-221.68
Subject: Observation of Excavation, Proposed Residence, Lot 68, Pinyon Mesa, Pinyon
Mesa Drive, Garfield County, Colorado
Gentlemen:
As requested, a representative of Kumar & Associates, Inc. observed the excavation at the
subject site on August 7, 2020 to evaluate the soils exposed for foundation support. The findings
of our observations and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report.
We previously conducted a subsoil study for design of foundations at the site and presented our
findings in a report dated May 6, 2019, Project No. 19-7-221.
The residence will be above crawlspace and the garage will have a slab -on -grade floor. Spread
footings placed on a minimum 3 feet of compacted structural fill and sized for an allowable
bearing pressure of 1,500 psf were recommended for the foundation support.
At the time of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation had been cut to at least 3 feet below
design bearing level and structural fill placement and compaction of the bottom lift had started.
We returned to the site to take in-place density tests on August 10 and the final grade test on
August 26. The test results are presented under separate cover and indicate adequate compaction
for the foundation support.
The soils exposed in the excavation and compacted structural fill are consistent with the soils
expected at the site and suitable for support of spread footings designed for the recommended
allowable bearing pressure of 1,500 psf with the settlement potential described in our previous
report. Loose disturbed soils should be removed in the footing areas prior to concrete placement.
Other recommendations presented in our previous report which are applicable should also be
observed.
The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils exposed
within the foundation excavation, the compaction test results and the previous subsurface
exploration at the site. Variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation could
increase the risk of foundation movement. We should be advised of any variations encountered
in the excavation conditions for possible changes to recommendations contained in this letter.
