Site History
Reserve at Elk Meadows (Elk Meadows), is a landscape of narrow plains and slopes that
overlook the Roaring Fork Valley and in recent history have been known as the Martino and
Bershenyi Ranches. The Bershenyi Ranch consists of two properties; one a roughly 1,100 acre
tract of high country used for summer pasture that is largely undeveloped except for a cabin
and dirt access roads. The parcel is not within the Reserve at Elk Meadows PUD boundary
but will, as a condition of the PUD approval, be preserved in its natural condition. The lower
elevation Bershenyi Ranch parcel and the Martino Ranch are combined to form the 505 acre
Reserve at Elk Meadows PUD.
The land that is proposed to become Elk Meadows was settled in the 1880's with ranching as
the main use. Timber was removed for fences, fuel, and construction. Cattle stocking appears
to have been moderate depending on snow depth. Natural meadows became focal points for
pasture and crop cultivation which has been primarily hay. Prior to ranching these gently
sloping meadows originally were native grasses, sagebrush and wildflowers. Most were plowed
up or inter -seeded with non-native plants to provide forage, hay and other crops. The meadow
east of Four Mile Road was cultivated until the 1990's but more recently has been maintained
in irrigated hay production. The meadows were flood irrigated except for the fields east of Four
Mile Road which in recent years have been irrigated by a side -roll agricultural sprinkling
system. Some erosion has occurred in association with the irrigation ditches. The vegetation
in the meadows was very short and little vegetation litter had accumulated under previous
management. The root systems on the meadow plants are likely highly reduced below ground
because the above -ground portions are continuously removed by grazing or haying. The
reduced root area in combination with compaction of the soil reduces infiltration and increases
the volume of run-off from the land surface and contributes to erosion in ditches and ravines.
The Bershenyi Ranch Homestead is split by Four Mile Road with the homestead residence
and machine sheds located west of the Road and livestock and hay barns located east of the
Four Mile Road. These uses, located close to each side of Four Mile Road, combined with a
sharp curve going down across Four Mile Creek have made this an increasingly uncomfortable
segment for Four Mile Road as traffic volumes grow.
Current Ecological Conditions
Land Cover. A classification of the ecological land cover was completed using a 1993 aerial
photo (Figure 1) and verified on May 2, 2005 and reflected in a Natural Resource Inventory
(Figure 1) graphic included following this section.
The ecological land cover types mapped on the properties are:
❑ Developed or disturbed land
❑ Hay/Pasture/(Crop)
46
❑ Riparian Woodland
❑ Gambel's Oak Woodland
❑ Meadow
❑ Mixed Conifer -Oak Forest
❑ Gambel's Oak -Aspen Woodland
❑ Pinyon -Juniper Woodland
Portions of the Reserve were greatly modified by human activity during the past 120 years.
Areas of modification include those mapped as developed or disturbed lands, hay/pasture, and
hay/pasture/crop. The remainder of the property has been modified to a lesser degree by
grazing, road construction, and erosion associated with flowing water.
The most abundant plant community in the Reserve is Gambel's oak woodland. It occupies
foothills and the steep slopes in the west part of the Reserve. Dominant plants here are
Gambel's oak (Quercus gambelii), juniper (Juniperus scopulorum/osteosperma), and pinyon
pine (Pinus edulis). In the 1890-1910 period a wildfire consumed much of this community on
the Reserve, except for a small area in the southwest. The Gambel's oak woodland that
developed after the wildfire supports widely -spaced trees and relatively sparse woody plant
cover compared to the unburned Gambel's oak woodland in the southwest.
Other plant communities occupy smaller areas of the Reserve. A narrow riparian woodland
runs from the west of the Reserve to Four -mile Creek. Big sagebrush grassland (Seriphidium
tridentata) is not mapped, but is scattered in small patches. The original vegetation of the
meadows may have been big sagebrush grassland. East of Four -mile Road is a large riparian
woodland that was altered by grazing. It is dominated by narrow -leaf cottonwood (Populus
angustifolia). The understory vegetation is a mixture of trees and shrubs, including box -elder
(Acer negundo), red -osier dogwood (Cornus sericea), and chokecherry (Prunus virginiana).
The groundcover has lost species variety due to grazing. The riparian woodland continues east
to Roaring Fork.
