Don
We included that sheet (S8.0 with clouded options) in the 6.2.22 set as well. I will point out how the
4 columns are clearly circled in red, and how the single beam is also
clearly circled in red, and then pointed to. Those were the only members which I intended to have
a wood option, which I told you in a phone
call the day I sent the original. I told you I could not get all of the steel to have wood options because
of the snow load. It is apparent this is not
what you wanted to hear.
The column to steel beam detail we provided on that same sheet shows a steel beam. How you
interpreted this
as a building wide "size my own beams out of wood" is not surprising to me because you were
strongly opposed to steel on the plan, and repeatedly
told me that I over engineered your house, which I interpreted as you saying we had no clue how to
do our job.
You were very clear that you had built this house before, using no steel and were shocked to see
steel.
We have already drafted your entire house twice. We do not have the available schedule nor desire
to redesign things. The solution we believe as being the best solution
for your project is exactly shown in the 6.2.22 set and includes steel. There are no wood beam or
wood column options that we feel will substitute in the situations identified as steel only.
As mentioned in the letter I sent you, we will not be discussing or exploring solutions regarding the
as-built conditions. You need to find another engineer to help you out.

Here is the steel option you sent me. This is what the county approved.

Hi Don
Here are some wood options for the steel beams and columns shown on S8.0.
The knife plate connection in the lower left corner is the connection you would use in the steel
beam to wood column condition.
Thanks.
