CARBON MONOXIDE
(CO) ALARMS
& ASBESTOS
INFORMATION
March 30, 2009
Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms are required in all new construction, remodels
and additions that require a building permit. As per State House Bill 09-
1091, CO alarms are required within 15 ft. of all sleeping rooms in both
single family and multifamily dwellings which have either fuel-fire
appliances or attached garage. These alarms must be listed, battery
powered and plugged into an outlet, or wired directly into the dwelling’s
electrical system or may be combined with a smoke detector system.
There are other requirements for installation of CO alarms in rental properties
and for any units being sold. Please see the house bill for these
provisions.
Please call your local Community Development if you have any questions. It is
well documented that these alarms save lives.
Thank you for your cooperation with these requirements.
Asbestos
Asbestos is a mineral fiber that has been used commonly in a variety of building
construction materials for insulation and as a fire-retardant. EPA and CPSC have
banned several asbestos products. Manufacturers have also voluntarily limited
uses of asbestos. Today, asbestos is most commonly found in older homes, in
pipe and furnace insulation materials, asbestos shingles, millboard, textured
paints and other coating materials, and floor tiles.
Elevated concentrations or airborne asbestos can occur after asbestos-containing
materials are disturbed by cutting, sanding or other remodeling activities. Improper
attempts to remove these materials can release asbestos fibers into the air in
home, increasing asbestos levels and endangering people living in those homes.
The asbestos staff of the Colorado Air Pollution Control Division assists schools and
businesses to comply with air pollution laws regulating asbestos and asbestos
containing materials. The regulation that governs asbestos in Colorado is the
Colorado Air Quality Control commission’s Regulations No.8, Part B,
“Emission Standards for Asbestos.”
