SEPARATION OF WATER AND SEWER MAINS
1. PARALLEL INSTALLATION:
A. NORMAL CONDITIONS --MAINS SHALL BE LAID AT LEAST TEN FEET
HORIZONTALLY FROM ANY SANITARY SEWER, STORM SEWER OR SEWER
MANHOLE. THE DISTANCE SHALL BE MEASURED EDGE TO EDGE.
B. UNUSUAL CONDITIONS --WHEN LOCAL CONDITIONS PREVENT A
HORIZONTAL SEPARATION OF TEN FEET, A WATER MAIN MAY BE
LAID CLOSER TO STORM OR SANITARY SEWER PROVIDED THAT:
1) IT IS LAID IN A SEPARATE TRENCH.
2) THE ELEVATION OF THE CROWN OF THE SEWER IS AT LEAST
18 INCHES BELOW THE INVERT OF THE WATER MAIN. SUCH
SEPARATION SHALL BE OF UNDISTURBED OR COMPACTED
EARTH.
3) WHERE THIS VERTICAL SEPARATION CANNOT BE OBTAINED,
THE SEWER SHALL BE CONSTRUCTED OF MATERIALS AND
WITH JOINTS THAT ARE EQUIVALENT TO WATER MAIN
STANDARDS OF CONSTRUCTION.
2. CROSSINGS:
A. NORMAL CONDITIONS --WATER MAINS CROSSING OVER HOUSE SEWERS,
STORM SEWERS, OR SANITARY SEWERS SHALL BE LAID TO PROVIDE
A SEPARATION OF AT LEAST 18 INCHES BETWEEN THEW INVERT OF
THE PRESSURE WATER MAIN AND THE CROWN OF THE SEWER.
B. UNUSUAL CONDITIONS --WHEN LOCAL CONDITIONS PREVENT A
VERTICAL SEPARATION AS DESCRIBED ABOVE, THE FOLLOWING
CONSTRUCTION SHALL BE USED:
1) SEWER PASSING OVER OR LESS THAN 18 INCHES UNDER
WATER MAINS SHALL BE CONSTRUCTED OR MODIFIED USING
ONE OF THE FOLLOWING METHODS:
a) ONE LENGTH OF PIPE (D.I.P. OR C900 PVC) AT LEAST
18 FEET LONG CENTERED OVER OR UNDER THE WATER MAIN.
JOINTS BETWEEN THE SEWER PIPE AND THE SPECIAL PIPE
SHALL BE ENCASED IN A CONCRETE COLLAR AT LEAST
6 INCHES THICK AND EXTENDING AT LEAST 6 INCHES
EITHER SIDE OF THE JOINT.
b) CONCRETE OR VITRIFIED CLAY SEWER PIPE WITH
REINFORCED CONCRETE ENCASEMENT. ENCASEMENT
SHALL BE AT LEAST 6 INCHES THICK AND EXTEND A
DISTANCE OF 10 FEET ON BOTH SIDES OF THE WATER
MAIN.
2) WATER MAINS PASSING UNDER SEWERS SHALL, IN
ADDITION, BE PROTECTED BY PROVIDING:
a) A VERTICAL SEPARATION OF AT LEAST 18 INCHES
BETWEEN THE INVERT OF THE SEWER AND THE CROWN
