The findings of our observations and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. We previously conducted a subsoil study for design of foundations at the site and presented our findings in a report dated July 22, 2021, Project No. 21-7-490. The proposed residence will be above crawlspace in the living area with an attached slab-on- grade garage. Spread footings placed on the dense gravel soil were recommended for the foundation support. At the time of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation had been cut in one level from about one to three feet below the adjacent ground surface. The soils exposed in the bottom of the excavation consisted of relatively dense, silty sandy gravel and cobbles in the northwestern part of the excavation (highlighted in yellow on attached plan) and sandy clay in the southeastern part of the excavation. No free water was encountered in the excavation and the soils were slightly moist. The gravel soils exposed in the northwestern part of the excavation are consistent with those previously encountered on the site and suitable for support of spread footings designed for the recommended allowable bearing pressure of 3,000 psf. Loose disturbed soils should be removed in the footing areas to expose the undisturbed natural granular soils. It was recommended to Matt Korus with Peak 3 Construction that the clay soils in the southeastern part of the excavation be removed and the foundation bearing level be extended down to the natural granular soils. The bearing soils should be protected from frost and concrete should not be placed on frozen soils. Other recommendations presented in our previous report which are applicable should also be observed. We can observe the remaining southeastern part for foundation bearing when dug down to the gravel soils.
