As Section 7-203 of the County's Land Use and Development Code states, no vegetat¡on is to be cut or removed within the 35-foot setback from the Ordinary High-Water mark of the Roaring Fork River. After viewing photographs from before and after construction, lt is apparent that vegetation was removed within the setback, primarily willows. My recommendation to Mr. Peterson and the Garfield County planning staff on June 27th was to cease any mow¡ng, weed whacking or tr¡mming of any kind indefinitely within the 35-foot setback. This will allow for willow volunteers (saplings) and any other existing native vegetation to recover and grow, providing some vegetative buffer directly along the river's edge. I suggest Mr. Peterson and Garfield County establish the 35-foot setback using a GPS boundary for consistency and future monitoring purposes. Additionally, I recommended to Mr. Peterson and the Garfield County planning staff planting some woody vegetation in the form of shrubs such as three-leaf sumac (existing on the east side of the riparian area)' I also recommended that Mr. Peterson plant a few narrowleaf cottonwood and ponderosa pine trees on the west side ofthe riparian area to perpetuatethe existing character ofthis area as several decadent individual trees have fallen in recent years. As always, I am available for any future site visits as needed to help ensure the best possible restoration of this riparian area.
