The findings of our observations and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. We previously provided recommendations for design of foundations at the site in a report dated February 7, 2018, Project No. 17-7-858. Buildings U and R are located on the upper bench to the south of Cattle Creek. The upper bench was constructed by cutting on the uphill side and filling on the downhill side. The building area was constructed to existing grade in 2000. The fill was placed for future building support. Strip footings placed on the natural soils or existing fill and sized for an allowable bearing pressure of 1,500 psf were designed for the foundation support. At the time of our visit to the site, the pit excavations had been dug with one pit excavated south of the southwest corner of the existing Building V (for Building U) and one pit excavated north of existing Building Q (for Building R). The soils exposed in the pits excavations consisted of about 1 foot of fill overlying silty clayey sand and gravel with scattered cobbles. We expect that the proposed footing grades will be in the natural soils at these sites. The near surface soils were slightly moist. The soil conditions exposed in the excavation are consistent with those previously encountered at the site and similar to those expected at footing grade. The soils should be suitable for support of spread footings designed for the assumed allowable bearing pressure of 1,500 psf. Loose disturbed soils in the footing areas should be moistened and compacted. Other recommendations presented in our previous report which are applicable should also be observed. The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils exposed at the ground surface and the previous review of bearing soils at the site. Variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation could increase the risk of foundation movement. We should be contacted to observe the completed footing excavations at the time of construction.
