RE: MartinezCabin Header Review
To whom is may concern:
A structural review of the in-place headers was performed on the two-story wood framed structure called the
Martinez Residence located ar409 County Road 265, Rifle, CO 81650. The attached documents labeled 'Project
2' reflect the current conditions and provide information regarding repair details for headers that were found
to be inadequate. Structural calculations were performed to determine the adequacy of the installed headers,
and it was found that the evaluated headers were structurally acceptable besides Header #7, #3, #2 and #5 in
the upstairs ofthe residence and Header #L7 onthe ground level ofthe residence. Header #1 and Header #3
require a new (2) zx9 header with a single trimmer and single king stud each side of the opening. This work
has been performed, reviewed, and deemed acceptable.
Header #2 and Header #5 require strengthening with additional hardware, which is detailed in Section A-A
shown on page 18 of this report.
Header #t7 onthe ground floor of the structure requires replacementwith aW6x20 steel beam (minimum) to
span the 6' opening for the French doors at the rear of the structure. The repair detail for Header #\7 is
contained within page 5 of this report.
Additionall¡ the [4) part 1 3/+" wide x 14" deep LVL with plumbing penetrations supporting the second level
floor system, highlighted in the plan on page 2,was found to be structurally acceptable per calculations without
need for repair. Photo 1 and Photo 2 on page 2 ofthe report depicts the LVL beam in its current state.
I, Thomas Tarcha, PE, certifii that the headers and the LVL evaluated in this report are sffucturally acceptable
for strength and do not pose risk to life safety so long as the repair instructions within this report are followed.
Failure to follow the recommendations within this report absolves Thomas Tarcha, PE of any liability. Header
deflection has the potential to create cracks in brittle finishes, such as drywall, and is not within the scope of
this report.
