Reid Architects, inc 412 North Mill Street PO Box 1303 D Aspen, Colorado 81612 When working with historic buildings keep in mind the following: a. Respect the integrity and historic design character of the building. 1. The special character of a historic building can be defined by the authenticity of what exists today of the original building. b. Protect and maintain significant features and stylistic elements. 1. Distinctive stylistic features, original construction or examples of skilled craftsmanship should be treated with sensitivity. The best preservation practice is to maintain historic fabric and features through regular and proper maintenance from the outset, to ensure that later intervention is not required. c. Preserve key, character -defining features of the property or building group. 1. Key features are those that help convey the character of the resource as it appeared during its period of historic significance. These may include the basic structural system and building materials, as well as the composition and detail of windows, doors, porches and architectural ornamentation. d. Repair deteriorated historic features. Only consider replacements when elements cannot be repaired. 1. Maintain the existing material, using recognized preservation methods whenever possible.
