(To avoid construction delay, we suggest arrangements for percolation test be made at least 24 hours prior to the end of the soaking period.) Please have at least 10 gallons of water available at the site for the percolation test. D. Upon completion, your Individual Sewage Disposal Permit will be issued. The Permit will be mailed to you unless other arrangements are made. *If a drywell (seepage pit) is proposed, consult with the Building & Sanitation Department for percolation test procedures. - !!IMPORTANT!! Please be advised that if the Sanitarian's initial field visit to your property reveals any unusual difficulties such as high water table, excessive percolation rates, bedrock, etc., the services of a Colorado Registered Professional Engineer and Board of Health approval will be required prior to the issuance of your Individual Sewage Disposal Permit. Step III: Final Inspection A. When all components are in place, connected and ready to cover, request final inspection by the Sanitarian. B. Dept. must be contacted for approval and detailed information concerning the proposed disposal system. Higher standards than those which follow may be required in individual cases to assure attainment of the objectives. Those objectives are to locate, construct, and • maintain individual sewage disposal systems in such a manner that existing or contemplated water supplies will not become contaminated and so that sewage will not overflow the ground surface and result in a nuisance or health hazard. 1. (a) It is desirable to provide sufficient land area for entire new absorption system if needed in future. (b) In every case, sufficient land area should be provided for the number of bed - . rooms (minimum of 2) that can be reasonably anticipated, including the unfinished space available for conversion as additional bedrooms. (c) Absorption area is figured as trench - bottom area and includes a statistical allowance for vertical side wall area. (FOR APPLICANTS INFORMATION) .(d) Absorption area for seepage pits is figured as effective side wall area beneath the inlet. (e) Unsuitable for seepage pits if over thirty. (f) Unsuitable for absorption systems if over sixty. Dwellings on less than two acres, areas of high water tables, or areas with a percolation test rate faster than 1" in 5 minutes must have alternative sewage facilities, i.e., central collection, holding tanks, individual treatment, etc. 1. Maximum length of drainage line: 100 linear feet 2. Minimum width of drainage trench: 18 inches 3. Minimum spacing between trenches or pipes: 6 feet 4. Minimum distance from septic tank and disposal field to property lines: 10 feet 14. Minimum sewer pipe and distribution pipe: 4 inch diameter Septic construction should be of concrete, concrete block or of a material that will resist deterioration and which can be made reasonably watertight. Acceptable drain field pipe materials include plastic, terra cotta, concrete. If the house sewerline is longer than 10 feet between house and septic tank, a clean - out Y should be installed as near as practicable to the house. Septic tanks should be inspected once a year and cleaned when necessary. Cleaning is recommended when space between the scum accumulation and sludge residue on the tank bottom is less than 18 inches. (FOR APPLICANTS INFORMATION) WATER CONSERVATION CHECKLIST FOR THE HOME These tips will not only save water, but will assist in lowering utility bills and extend the life span of your individual sewage disposal system. Have Will Done Do ( Install flow control devices in showers. ( 1 ( 10r, limit the amount of shower water by the way you use hot and cold water faucets. F 1 1 1 Check to see how often your home water softening equipment regen- erates and backwashes. It can use as much as 100 gallons of water each time it does this. You may want to cut down on the use of such equipment. Reserve softened water for kitchen use, bathing and laundry. Use unsoftened water for all other purposes. (This may require a bypass line but this is advisable under any circumstances.) I 1 1 Insulate hot water pipes to reduce the amount of water which must be run to get hot water to the faucet. 1 1 I If possible, locate the hot water heater as close as possible to bathroom, kitchen and laundry areas. The closer the heater is to the faucet, the less water has to be run. For this reason, it's sometimes better to have two small water heaters located in strategic places. ( 11 1 Check faucets for drips. Make repairs promptly. These problems get worse - never better. Teach children to turn water faucets off tightly after use. 1 See if your toilet is continuing to flow after flushing. Put a small amount of food coloring into the tank. If the color trickles into the bowl, there is a leak and repairs are needed. ( Place a quart plastic (not glass) bottle filled with water in your flush tank to save 1 quart of water per flush. ( Don't use a brick to fill space in your toilet flush tank. Brick particles could damage valves. ( 1 1 You can adjust the float level of the toilet to reduce the amount of water necessary to flush the toilet. Do this carefully to avoid damaging the system. ( ( 1 1 In buying a new toilet, look for a "low volume" model. They don't use as much water per flush. ( Avoid using the toilet as a trash basket for facial tissues, etc. Each flush uses 5 to 7 gallons of water. ( 1 ( ( Wash only full loads of laundry. ( ( ( ( Wash only full loads of dishes in dishwasher. A dishwasher uses about 16 gallons of water per load. (cont.) (FOR APPLICANTS INFORMATION) Have Will 'Done Do .1 1 1 Buying a new washing machine? An automatic clothes washer uses 32 -45 gallons of water per load. Shop carefully and look for these features: - Models that use less water. - Capacity to fill needs. Don't buy a larger machine than you need. - "Float fill" models that provide a more accurate control of the amount of water used than "time" fill. - Water level controls so can adjust the amount of water you use, depending on the load. - "Suds saver" models that save wash water for later loads. 1 1 Save handwashing jobs and do them all together. If possible, use the same sudsy water for several items. Make one rinse do the job of two. 1 Check garments to make sure they need washing. Don't wash clothes more often than necessary. 1 Avoid buying new clothes that require separate washings. Urge family members to take showers instead of tub baths. Baths take as much as 30 -50 gallons of water. Showers use 5 -15 gallons of water per minute. 1 Limit shower time to 2 minutes or less. 1 1 Relax with massage, stretching, or exercises instead of showers to save water. 1 1 Turn off shower water while you apply soap to body or lather hair. 1 If possible, close bathtub drain during shower so that all the water stays in the tub. Use this to flush the toilet or water outdoor plants. 1 1 Turn off water while you shave, brush teeth, etc. 1 1 Save water used to wash produce and to do other kitchen chores by placing a bowl or basin under the faucet. Use water saved for cleaning, watering plants, etc. To get warm water, turn hot water on first; then add cold water as needed. You get warm water quicker this way and save water. 1 1 Reduce the use of garbage disposals (which use as much as 2 gallons of water per minute) by peeling vegetables, eggs and other foods on newspapers. Wrap the food waste and dispose of it with the trash. Or, use food waste in a garden compost pile. Chill water in bottles in the refrigerator to avoid running water. Shake bottle before serving to incorporate air in the water so that it doesn't taste flat. 1 Put drinking water on the table only if people really drink it.
