Dear Mr. and Mrs. Dierkes:
As requested, .we met with you at the subject site on February 17,
1982 to observe the excavation for foundation analysis.
At the'time of our site visit, the excavation had been cut between
approximately 1 1/2 to 7 feet below adjacent ground surface. A frost
depth trench had been excavated along the northerly perimeter whereas
the southern end of the excavation was cut deepest into the hillside.
The surrounding ground surface was gently sloping. The soils exposed in
the excavation consisted predominantly of slightly calcareous and porous
silty clays. The northeastern corner was gravelly near original ground
surface. The clays were generally slightly moist to moist and stiff.
Occasional localized softer pockets were observed. Results of consolidation
tests, presented on the attached figure, indicate the stiff clays to be
slightly to moderately compressible upon loading and wetting. The soft
pockets are highly compressible.
We understand the proposed structure will consist of a 2 1/2 story
log hone supported on a concrete foundation. Considering the subsoil
conditions exposed in the excavation, conventional spread footings
placed on the natural stiff clays and designed for a maxi= bearing
pressure of 1500 psf should be suitable for support of the proposed
structures. Perimeter footings on the order Of 20 inches wide should be
feasible. Continuous foundation walls should also be reinforced to span
an unsupported length of at least 10 feet in the event of scare differential
movement. Bast walls acting as retaining structures should also be
designed to resist a lateral earth pressure of at least 40 psf per foot

of depth. Backfill should be well coMpacted and sloped to drain away
from the structure for a minimum distance of 10 feet.
This report is based upon observation of the soils exposed in the
open excavation. In order to reveal the subsoil conditions below foundation
elevations, drilling would be required. It is possible that the subsoils
below those exposed in the open excavation may change and may contradict
the recommen•. '•ns presented in this report.
