DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
AND POLLUTION CONTROL
COUNTY OF GARFIELD
PROCEDURE REQUIRED FOR COMPLIANCE WITH THE GARFIELD COUNTY SEWAGE
DISPOSAL REGULATIONS:
Step I: Application
A. Obtain a standard application for approval of sewage disposal system.
Forms available at the Sanitarians' Office, 2014 Blake Avenue, Glenwood
Springs.
B. Obtain a receipt for $45.00 fee. Make checks payable to Garfield
County Clerk and Recorder.
C. File completed application and proposed site location map (provided plot
plan) with the Sanitarian at the office. Please include accurate measure-
ments from house to tank.
D. Post application copy in plastic at construction site.
Step II: Percolation Tests
A. Prepare two percolation holes to maximum depth at which absorption
will take place.
B. Fill with water and soak for 24 hours prior to test.
C. Request percolation test by Sanitarian. (To avoid construction delay, we
suggest arrangements for percolation test be made at least 48 hours prior
to the end of the soaking period.)
D. Receive permit including absolute minimum design criteria required by law.
E. Post permit packet in a conspicuous place at the construction site. IF NOT
POSTED, PERMIT SHALL BE DEEMED VOID AND A NEW PERMIT AND FEE WILL
BE REQUIRED.
Step III: Final Inspection
A. When all components are in place, connected and ready to cover, request
final inspection by the Sanitarian.
B. DO NOT cover any part of the system prior to inspection.
C. Upon final approval, carefully cover entire system.

•
1. Maximum length of drainage line: 100 linear feet
2. Minimum width of drainage trench: 18 inches
3. Maximum spacing between trenches
or pipes: 6 feet
4. Minimum grade of drainage lines: 1/4 inch per 10 linear feet
5. Minimum depth rock under drain PVC: 1 foot under PVC, 6" over PVC
6. Minimum depth of cover over distribution lines: 4 inches
7. Maximum depth of cover over distribution lines: 36 inches
8. Minimum grade of house sewer: 1/8 to 1/4 in. per linear foot
9. Minimum distance of sewage desposal system from
dwelling: 10 feet to tank, 20 feet to
absorption area.
10. Minimum distance of leaching area to a well: 100 feet
11. Minimum distance of septic tank to a well: 50 feet
12. Minimum distance of leaching area to a stream
of water course: 50 feet
13. Minimum distance from septic tank and disposal
field to property lines: 10 feet
14. Minimum sewer pipe and distribution pipe: 4 inch diameter
Septic construction should be of concrete, concrete block or of
a material that will resist deterioration and which can be made
reasonably watertight.
Acceptable drain field pipe materials include plastic, terra cotta,
concrete. If the house sewer line is longer than 10 feet between
house and septic tank, a cleanout Y should be installed as near as
practicable to the house.
The amount and type of disposal field required is based on soil
porocity, grouqd water table, drainage conditions, maximum sewage
load, etc. Information and an appropriate determination can be ob-
tained from your local Health Department.
Septic tanks should be inspected once a year and cleaned when
necessary. Cleaning is recommended when space between the
scum accumulation and sludge residue on the tank bottom is less v
than 18 inches.
