Box 1252 Rifle, Colorado 81650 Dear Al and Carol: In their meeting of March 8, 1976, the Garfield County Board of Health unanimously approved the issuance of the enclosed Repair and Emergency Use Permit for your individual sewage disposal system. I'll be in touch with you the first part of May to arrange for a date to further check the water table in the immediate vicinity of the leaching area. Should you have any concerns, please give me a call. Very truly yours, ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT Edward L. Observations are as follows: 1. Ten foot profile hole had been dug. (a) Standing water was observed at the 8 foot level. (b) Seeping water was observed at seven foot level. (c) No fluorescein dye was observed. (d) Water was not discolored. (e) No septic odor noticed. (f) Mr. Drayton stated the profile hole had been excavated on Sunday, August 31, 1975, and he first observed water on September 2, 1975. 2. Inspection holes were dug in the presence of this inspector at the far ends of the outermost laterals. (a) Septic tank effluent of a dark (black) discoloration was observed at approximately the two foot level. (b) Definite septic odor noticed. (c) 1 1/2" to 2 1/2" aggregate observed in the trenches. (d) Four inch PVC perforated pipe observed. (e) Aggregate under the pipe was in excess of 6 inches. (f) Aggregate over the pipe was over 2 inches in depth. (g) Generous amount of hay was observed between the aggregate and earth cover. (h) Mr. Drayton stated he had installed 180' of absorption trenches in three laterals 3' wide and 4' deep with 18" of aggregate under the pipe. • ETTER TO FOLLOW: ( ) OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS: DATE: , 19 REPRESENTATIVE- S: 7 (Rev. 6 -70 -100) 77. A 2' wide, 8' deep, 50' plus long subsurface irrigation water diversion dam had been constructed with 3 tons of bentonite and a plastic curtain extending from top to bottom along the entire length according to Mr. Drayton. (a) An inspection hole dug in the presence of this inspector into the dam revealed the plaster and a sticky, grey, clayish substance believed to be bentonite. Conclusion: C • 1. Based on the trenches being 4' deep and seeping water being observed at the 7' level, only 3' of permeable soil existed between the bottom of the trenches and the water table at the site of the observed 10' profile hole. It should be noted however that if the minimum required 3' deep trench had been installed, a four foot strata would exist•between the bottom of the trench and the present water table. Two other points must be considered: (a) When is the maximum ground water table at its height - during the summer irrigation months or during the spring run -off? (b) Due to the lower elevation of the 10' profile hole provided, are the three existing laterals situated at slightly higher elevation within the required 4' of suitable soil strata between the water table and bottom of the leach lines. It would be this inspector's request on point (a) to again observe an 8' profile hole during the Spring of 1976. It would also be requested by this inspector to have the leach- ing area surveyed by a registered land surveyor and those results presented to this office to determine if one or more of the laterals are in compliance in relation to the grade and water table. 2. Proper materials had been used and assembly was satisfactory. Mr. Drayton's • figures of 180' of leaching trenches 3 feet wide would provide 540 square ETTER TO FOLLOW: ( ) OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS: • D ATE: , 19 REPRESENTATIVE: a e.. _n -S OD) - Page Three L - COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH I • DIVISION OF ENGINEERING AND SANITATION A C T I V I T Y R E PORT Code scion Sewage. • County Garfield • FILE REFERENCE Individual Home Sewage Disposal INDIVIDUAL OR ESTABLISHMENT: Alfred Drayton ADDRESS: _ 452.W. 11th - Rifle, Colorado 81650 • NARRATIVE: continued feet of absorption area. (perc rate 1" in 14 minutes = 185 square feet of absorption area per bedroom. Three bedrooms x 185 = 555 square feet minimum requirement.) In order to comply with this requirement, a three foot extension of one of the laterals would be necessary. • • • v ' ETTER TO FOLLOW: ( ) OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS: SATE: September 3 , 19 75 . Drayton Box 1252 Rifle, CO 81650 Dear Mr. Drayton: Mr. Kinkade and Mr. Feld from the Garfield County Environmental Health Department conducted a third field inspection for your in- dividual home sewage treatment. Our findings: The property is unsuitable for a standard septic system for the following reasons: 1. No perculation rate. 2. Lack of usable area. 3. Proximity of natural springs. 4. Surrounding terrain. Our suggestions for possible alternatives are as follows: 1. Annex the property to the City and connect to the City sewer line. 2. Provide for a sealed holding tank that would have to be pumped and removed on a regular basis. 3. Have aRegistered Professionsl Engineer custom design a system and submit it to our office for approval. 4. Install aerated treatment unit (1000 gallons plus) with 350 square feet sand filter bed (of approved design) and chlorination contact chamber (200 gallons plus) with surface discharge. r 5. Construct house on top of hill and use present building site for a 3000 square foot Nordak Evapotranspiration bed. Inform us please of your choice of alternatives and we will assist you in any way possible: Sincerely, Ed Feld Garfield County Deputy Sanitarian Lamont Kinkade a i "O rfield Oounty :.'. r bi "cc tor. of Environmental Health • 4 r ! • • r.— • • /'7 7973 /ve - I/2l9YTLA /C/iv /ei920{ 6i5 iG -zdJ sry 4'v /,eoN nt 6-ate te _ cO.✓OUcnazD 77W.eO 1'/ e YOcv //V 0/el/Dales• /7 sSZv *" 7 en- e✓ T. oe/2 No /Nca5 nthr— P2o, —ry /s u/Use,/ e s 7-7.771/4) .1 se 77c- s Ys rte j ,'2 77/x8 roc-« -v /4v:, /ze - s.c J, /O "e-2e—mac C-49T7D esI ,'2- rrr z . ,C Ls7 3.
