P.C. Box 229 New Castle, CO 81647 Subject: Soils Evaluation, Percolation Testa and Design Recommendations for Individual Sewage System Design for Lot 14, Filing 2, Mineota Estates Subdivision, located on Kiowa Drive, Silt, CO Dear Chris, As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soiia Study and percolation tests to recommend a design for a septic system for the proposed Mike Larson residence. We conducted this study according to Section VII. of the Worado penar tment of Hutt - Guidelines for Individual 8qjoe eviler/Is flttaal. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. This planned residence is a three bedroom, two bathroom house of approximately 1700 square feet. The house is to have a washing machine, but no garbage disposal. The location of the proposed residence and sewage disposal field are shown on Figure 1. The wastewater flow from this residence is estimated to be 450 gallons per day (GPO). MargOndfigna: The lot is a part of the Mineota Estates Subdivision, approximately 16.3 acres In size. The building is occurring on a ridge overlooking the valley floor to the Northeast. The property served by a subdivision well. The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the absorption field, slopes to the East at a 15% grade. There are no Irrigation ditches apparent in the area of the proposed absorption system. There was a typical vegetation pattern of sparse pinyon and juniper trees on the upper portions of the property and sagebrush and grasses In the lower part of the lot where it is proposed to construct the absorption field. This excavation revealed that sandstone bedrock was present within three and one half feet of the surface of the ground. Mother profile excavation to eight feet was done below the ridge near the Southeast comer of the property. No ground water was encountered in this profile excavation. Bedrock was not present within eight feet of the surface of the ground. However, there was some loose rock on the surface and within the subsoil matrix of this area. The subsoil can be characterized as a clay loam. The soil tends to swell when wet and compacted under the pressure of the excavating equipment. P I *?S IllMOa: The subsurface Boll conditions ware evaluated with the standard percolation teat procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. The test holes were prepared by digging three small ten -Inch diameter holes to a depth of two and one half feet with hand tools. Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption trench area uphill of the Southeast comer of the property This testing was performed In the three shallow holes. It is Important to note that no gravel was placed into the bottom of each small percolation test hole to protect the bottom of the hole from scouring when water was added. The percolation holes were pre - soaked before our testing by adding water the morning of the percolation test. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table 1. These results Indicate the clay loam soils have an average percolation rate of 40 minutes per inch, a satisfactory percolation rate under County criteria. Minimum County Redulrsdlmres: The percolation rates in the clay loam subsoil were measured at an average of 40 minutes per inch. The minimum Garfield County requirements for this installation are based on a system flow of 450 gallons per day. This flow would require a septic tank of 1000 gallons minimum volume, and a minimum of 900 square feet of standard absorption trench. Under some jurisdictions, including Garfield County, an additional 40% Increase in the 06/06/1994 10:00 3039232766 BOB NELSON, NEWS,LTD PAGE 11 Larson Property Lot 14, Filing 2, Mineota Ridge Subdivision Septic System Site Evaluation and Design Recommendations 06/06/94 Page 3 absorption area required must be provided, if there Is a washing machine, and an additional 20% if there is a garbage disposal in the residence, These adjustments bring the total area requirement to 1260 square feet for this residence. We believe it is prudent to size the absorption area wkh a washing machine and disposal In mind. A standard absorption trench is defined as follows: A standard absorption trench Is an excavation less than three-feet (3') wide and containing a single 4 -inch (4 ") perforated distribution pipe in the center. A minimum of six- Inches (6 ") of 1/2 inch to 2 1/2 inch diameter gravel Is placed under the distribution pipe. A sufficient amount of additional gravel Is placed around and over the distribution pipe and to bed and cover the pipe with a minimum of two inches (2 ") of gravel. A minimum of two trenches is required for any such installation. Recommended On-site Wastewater Dlsoosal Dear: Because of the unsuitable conditions of shallow bedrock in the building area, we believe that the best area for the absorption field is below the building site. This will require a long effluent line of two hundred feet to reach the absorption field from a septic tank location near the house. We recommend that the sewage system consist of a 1250-gallon concrete septic tank, a distribution box, and several laterals of absorption trench. The site is quite a distance from the main roads. As a result, we believe that the access to this area makes the use of gravel somewhat less attractive. We would suggest that you plan a method of construction that uses one of the grantees systems. The use of "Infiltrator"^" leaching chambers, or the like, also permits a 50% reduction in absorption area under State Guidelines. This reduction is based on manufacturer's claims that the soil interface is not masked by gravel, and on an approval of such a reduction by the Colorado Department of Health, Water Quality Control Division. This type of construction would require 210 lineal feet of shallow trench excavation, three feet wide. Therefore, the suggested design incorporates the use of the alternative listed above. We recommend that the septic system consist of the septic tank, placed near the 06/06/1994 10:00 3039232766 BOB NELSON, NEWS,LTD PAGE 12 Larson Property Lot 14, Filing 2, Mineota Ridge Subdivision Septic System Site Evaluation and Design Recommendations 08/08/94 Page 4 residence, a long effluent line to the flatter portion of the property, and three trenches, located uphill and close to the east property line, each 70 feet long. It is advisable to excavate these trenches as shallow as possible, to a depth of no more than four feet, and to place each of the trenches on contour. The minimum required separation between trenches is six feet, although excavators often find that e ten foot separation makes the system easier to Install. It Is advisable to use a distribution box, placed Just above the top trench, to equalize the flow to each of the three trenches. Limltatlons: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices In this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location Indicated. There Is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations In the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this Investigation, and may need additional evaluation if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be advlsed of any unusual situations as soon u possible so we may reevaluate our recommendations. If you have questions or if we may be of further assistance, please calf the office. Sincerely, tog/r/la Robert F.
