Our recommendations are based on the site visit and percolation test conducted by HCE on May 27, 1995. The existing field is reported to be at a relatively shallow depth, even though it was recommended (per a note on the ISDS permit) to be 12 feet deep. A test excavation was opened by the Contractor and the material encountered at approximately the 12 to 13 foot level appeared to he more granular than the overlying soil. Therefore, the percolation testing was perforated at a depth of approximately thirteen feet at the bottom of the test excavation which was located northwesterly of the house. The percolation rate was 55 minutes per inch. (The existing field size was apparently based on a percolation rate of 5 minutes per inch.) We recommend that a standard absorption bed be utilized, and that it be placed at the depth where the more sandy material begins, approximately 13 feet. In addition, we recommend that the field be relatively long and narrow and that siphon closing be used. This ISDS would serve a single fancily residence with six bedrooms. Therefore, the estimated average wastewater flow would be 900 gallons per day. The design flow, per regulation, is 1.5 times the average, or 1350 gallons per day. 923 Cooper Avenue • Glenwood Springs, CO 81601 Telephone: 303- 945 -8676 • FAX: 303-945-2555 • r • Smith May 30, 1995 Page 2 The required standard absorption area (based on 55 minutes per inch) is 2002 square feet. Reducing that number 40% for using "Infiltrator" units would give 1201 square feet. At 18.75 square feet per unit, 64 units would be required. The minimum size of septic tank required is 1750 gallons, however, but since that is not a standard size, we recommend two 1000 gallon tanks in series. We recommend a that a prefabricated polyethylene tank with automatic siphon built in be used for dosing. The existing aeration tank should be abandoned, or could be used for an additional tank prior to the new septic tanks. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact us.
