Re: Individual Sewage Disposal System for Commercial Buildings
Garfield County, CO
HCE File Number 95004.24
Dear Rocky:
In accordance with your request, High Country Engineering, Inc. personnel performed a
percolation test in an area between the existing building and the proposed building on your site
on County Road 110, just above the intersection with Highway 82. The profile hole showed
essentially no topsoil, approximately one foot of light colored fine silt, then the remainder was
alluvial granular material up to cobble size. The average percolation rate, of the three holes
tested, was less than five minutes per inch. Therefore, we recommend a sand filter type of
system.
We understand that you expect the total number of workers using the existing and proposed
buildings for the full work day, to be four to six. We recommend using 6 employees for design
purposes. For a typical office or factory worker, the average daily usage is 15 gallons per
person per day. For six persons the average daily usage would be 90 gallons per day. Design
flows are typically taken as 1.5 times the average, which would be 135 gallons per day.
We also understand that you wish to incorporate the possibility of a future two bedroom
apartment (or two one bedroom apartments) on the site into the design of the septic system.
One bedroom is typically taken as two persons, using 75 gallons per person per day, average,
or 150 gallons per day. Design flow of 1.5 times average would be 450 gallons per day (gpd).
The total design flow would then be 135 gpd plus 450 gpd, or 585 gpd.
The usual loading rate for sand filters is 0.95 gallons per square foot per day. This would
require a sand bed with a minimum size of 616 square feet. This could be accomplished with
a square bed of 24 feet by 26 feet.

The size of the septic tank should be 1000 gallons, which is probably the smallest available
anyway.
We have enclosed some typical details of a sand bed system for your use.
