Dear Mr. White,
Per our telephone conversation of May 1, 1998, we are sending a re-
vised tank configuration for the OWS.
It is acceptable to replace the single oversized septic tank with the
screened pump vault with two 1000 gallon septic tanks as indicated on
the attached Revised Fig. 2. The first tank should be a single com-
partment 1000 gallon tank and the second a two compartment 1000 gallon
tank with a effluent filter at the "tee" in the tank divider and the
pump in the second chamber. c y C cA 7 (#(S o,v c c nee GK e

Subject: OWS Repair Design, Existing Residence`
0053 Pine Street
Lots 11 and 12, Block 13, Copperton
Garfield County, Colorado
Job No. 9005
Dear Mr. and Mrs. White,
As requested, we prepared an onsite wastewater system (OWS) repair
design for the subject site. We net you at the site on April 3, 1998.
We met with Don Owens of the Garfield County Building and Sanitation
Department ( GCBSD) and discussed design parameters and the use of a
screen vault for the repair OWS. The permit for the existing OWS is
No. 896. The repair OWS will be installed under Permit No. 2895.
SITE CONDITIONS - The site is an approximate 0.18 acre lot located in
a residential area in Garfield County, Colorado. The locations of the
existing residence and existing OWS components are presented on Fig.
1. The site is relatively flat. The proposed field area has a moder-
ate cover of native grasses and a sparse cover of trees.
EXISTING AND PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION - A single family two bedroom resi-
dence is located as indicated on Fig. 1. The home is provided water
by a community well west of the lot as indicated on Fig. 2. Records
from GCBSD indicate the OWS was installed in 1980. The existing system
consists of a 750 gallon septic tank and a 18 feet by 28 feet field,
504 square feet (SF). We understand the OWS has failed with effluent
hacking into the residence. It is proposed to upgrade the two bedroom
residence to three bedrooms. Sewage loading for a three bedroom home
is 450 gallons per day (GPD), 600 GPD with a 1.5 peaking factor. The
proposed field area includes loading from a garbage grinder, washer
machine, and dish washer. The well west of the property is greater
than 100 feet from the proposed drain field area.
SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS - Subsurface conditions were investigated by
excavating a profile pit. Subsurface conditions encountered consist
of clayey, silty sand to 2 feet, underlain by sand and gravel to the
maximum depth explored of 8 feet. No free water or bedrock was en-
countered. Don Owens indicated it is permissible to use the percola-
tion rate, 10 minutes per inch, from Permit No. 896. Additional per-
colation test were not performed.
RECOMMENDATIONS - We believe a repair OWS can be installed in the area
indicated on Fig. 2. The OWS is based on an average daily flow of 450

GPD, a percolation rate of 10 MPI,'and and the use of 2 feet of sand
filter. The existing tank should be replaced due to it's inadequate
capacity and site constraints, with a new oversized tank with a pump
nearer the house. We recommend the installation of a 1250 gallon two
compartment precast concrete septic tank with a pump in a screened
vault as indicated on Fig. 4. We' believe dosing of the field will
prolong the life of the system, which is important due to the limited
area for a drain field at the site. Because of the age and location
of existing field, we recommend it be abandoned. We recommend the
installation of a 18 feet by 33 feet field, 594 square feet (SF), con -
structedas presented on Fig. 3. The proposed field area is larger
than percolation test and sewage loading require, but smaller than
typically required for a sand filter. We have used the maximum area
available to prolong the life of the OWS. The proposed field should
be over - excavated through the clayey sand to the sand and gravel,
2 feet below the dispersal gravel layer. The excavated
material should be replaced with a sand filter material, concrete
sand. We recommend over - excavating to remove biomat which accumulated
in the existing field and to provide suitable filter material. The
over- excavated material can be used as backfill or hauled off -site.
We recommend relocating the driveway as indicated in Fig. 2. Parking
vehicles on the field can compact soils and harm the field.
We recommend the surface of the field be seeded after installation of
the system. No lawn irrigation or sprinkler system should be installed
above the field.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE - The owner must realize an OWS is different
from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume
responsibility for maintenance of the system. The system is relatively
maintenance free, but the owner must have the septic tank pumped and
the screen vault cleaned. We recommend the tank be pumped every two
years and the screen vault cleaned (hosed off) at the time of pumping.
There are daily considerations, such as not putting plastic or other
nonbiodegradable material into the OWS. Water use must be monitored
so toilets are not allowed to run when seals malfunction. To illus-
trate the point, a running toilet can consume in excess of 1000 GPD if
allowed to run. A 1000 GPD loading could irreparably harm the system.
We caution against installation of a water softener. The hydraulic
loading from a water softener is detrimental to OWS. A separate dry -
well should be installed for the backwash if a softener is installed.
LIMITATIONS - An OWS design requires installation by a contractor who
is experienced in its installation. Our investigation, layout, and
recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions
considerably different from those described in this report are encoun-
tered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the proposed
OWS. If modifications to this design are made by the Health Depart-
ment, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance
of our OWS design.
All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations.
Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and
other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to
conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of
• 3
the system must have demonstrated a knowledge of the ISDS regulations
' and requirements.
The OWS :design includes one installation observation. Additional
observations are not included in the cost of this design. If there
are any questions or we can be of further service, please call.
