Dear Jack: As requested, we performed percolation testing at the subject site on June 22, 1999. The work was performed in accordance with our agreement for professional services with you dated June 21, 1999. Three percolation pits had been dug and soaked prior to our site visit. The pits exposed about 4 feet of black clay above very stiff clay and gravel with scattered cobbles and small boulders. There was no groundwater seepage to the pit depths of about 8 Y2 feet. Two of the percolation holes in the bottom of the pits still had standing water from the pre- soaking. The results of the percolation testing are summarized in Table I. The average percolation rate for all of the readings was 240 to 480 minutes per inch and slower. Based on the test results, a conventional infiltration septic disposal system does not appear feasible. A civil engineer should be contacted for possible septic disposal design alternatives. We have reviewed the site, soils profiles in the field and percolation test from Hepworth - Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. The site has an existing cabin, which we have assumed two bedrooms for design criteria. The existing ground surface near the area for the proposed septic system slopes from the cabin at 5% to 10% grade. Scattered boulders are visibly exposed on the ground surface. Attached herewith are the results of the subsurface investigation and percolation tests conducted by Hepworth- Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. dated June 23, 1999. The subsoil encountered at the site consists of about 4 feet of black clay above very stiff clay and gravel with scattered cobble and small boulders. The absorption rate of the soils onsite were 240 to 480 minute per inch and slower. Due to the wide variation in absorption rates, and rates longer than 60 minutes per inch a conventional leach field system will not be acceptable. As an alternative solution, an absorption system in combination with a Evapotranspiration System (ET) is recommended. The ET System is not lined and will act as an absorption combined with an Evapotranspiration System. ]design Criteria: Proposed 2 bedroom house 2 persons per bedroom 75 gallons per person Q Ave. = 2 * 2 * 75 = 300 gallons Q Design = Q Ave. * 1.5 = 450 gallons Septic Tank; 30 hour retention Volume = Q Design * 1.25 = 450 * 1.25 = 562.5 Gallons Use 750 gallon septic tank Absorption Field/ET Designs A (S.F.) = O *217 where A = area Q = design flow 50 " /yr. 502 Main Street • Suite A3 • Carbondale, CO 81623 • (970) 704 -0311 • Fax (970) 704 -0313 SOPRIS ENGINEERING • LLC civil consultants Jack Greathouse SE Job No. 99084.01 • Aug. 17, 1999 Page 2 This design will give a recommended minimum absorption area. A =450'"237 = 2,133 -S.F. 50 General Notes; 1) All materials and installation practices shall conform to the Garfield County Individual Sewage Disposal Regulation. 2) All sewer lines in the system shall be Schedule 40 or SDR -35 PVC unless specified otherwise on the plans. 3) The bed area must be protected to prevent damage from vehicular or livestock traffic and must be crowned to divert drainage runoff away from the bed. 4) Add a two -way cleanout on service line from the house. 5) Livestock. should not be confined in the field area. Our design and recommendations are based upon data supplied to us by others. If subsurface or site conditions are found to be different from those decided in this report, we should be notified to evaluate the effect it may have on the proposed ISDS. If the County . Environmental Health Department requests changes or modifications to this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the effect on the ISDS.
