Re: Septic System Review
Dear Jim:
In follow up to our Oct. 20, 1994 telephone conversation regarding your present septic
disposal system, Jerome Gamba & Associates, Inc. is pleased to submit the following
analysis.
It is our understanding that you are planning to expand your present work shop. It is also
our understanding that you now have nine full time employees and the shop expansion will
include two batluooms, one of which will include a shower facility.
Our analysis calculations use a flow rate of 16 gallons /person/day as required by the
Garfield County Health Department.
15 gal/person/day x 9 employees = 136 gal/day
shower 14.7 gal/person/day x 9 employees = 132.3 gal/d.y
total = 267.3 gal/day
Maximum Daily Flow is 1.5 times the
Average Daily Flow of 135 gal/day
267.3 gal/day x 1.5 = 400.96 gallons/day
Minimum tank size as required by Health Department: required detention time of 30 hrs.
It is our understanding that the existing Septic Tank has a capacity of 1000 gallons.
Septic Tank Calculations: TC = (30/24)(125%) x Max. Flow
405 gallons /day 16.9 gallons /hr
1000 ga1/16.8 gal/hr = 47 hrs detention time
Maximum flow for 1000 gallon septic tank
1000 gal/(301us x 1.25) — 26 gal/hr
624 gal/day
The area calculation for a septic pit is the same as the calculation for a leach bed but for
a pit only the side wall area is considered for, the leaching surface. It is our understanding
that the existing system is a 1000 gallon septic pit.
Leach area calculation: Area = Max. Daily Flow x sqrt of percolation rate
5
s 1c
It is our understating that the radius of the septic pit is four feet and the height is 20 feet.
Therefore the side wall area is 602 s.f.. q
therefore, using the flow rate of 625 gal/day and the side wall area of 602 s.f., the percolation rate I 1 y ,
would be: 16 min/inch.
using the lower flow rate of 405 gal/day the required percolation would be: 39 min/inch
Garfield County requires that a percolation test be required at each soil strata encountered during the
construction process. The percolation rate used for the sidewall area calculation is a weighted percolation
rate using all of the percolation test results.
The existing Septic Disposal System is, in our opinion, an adequate system for your proposed expansion.
Garfield County may require you to provide percolation tests at your site to determine if the percolation
rate is within the above mentioned parameters.
Jerome Gamba & Associates, Inc. has not executed an on -site investigation of the proposed septic system
and we have used all data pertaining to the septic as discussed in our phone conversation.
