Box 186 Fort Morgan, CO 80701 GARFIELD COUNTY Building and Planning Subject: Occupancy Separation on Fuller residence. Enclosure. Dear Don: I apologize for the fact that our fax was not operational last week when Sandra attempted to send me some information. I did receive it in the mail and appreciate her sending it so promptly. I reviewed it and have no problem with the fire resistance of the wall as specified in UL Design No. U528. However, it is a problem as indicated on the construction drawings for Mr. Fullers residence. On March 16th I sent a communication to I.C.B.O. (International Conference of Building Officials) for a code interpretation (copy enclosed). I received a call from Shirin Adder P.E. a staff engineer with I.C.B.O. later the same day and had a lengthy discussion with her. It was her interpretation also, that the drawing did not comply with the specified sections of the U.B.C. I indicated to her a correction that I felt would comply with the code and she agreed. I have enclosed the drawing that I discussed with her for your reference and you may want to discuss it with Ron Sutton for his opinion. After you have had the opportunity to review this please give me a call if you have any questions. I appreciate your cooperation, let me know what you propose for this project. OBSERVATIONS BY BUILDING OFFICIAL: 1. The fire resistive membrane on the garage side is not continuous for the height of the occupancy separation. 2. Even if the f-r membrane continued to the height of the occupancy separation a fire in the garage may cause the failure of the wood truss system. Such failure would destroy any close fit of the f-r membrane around the supported portion of the truss at the wall. The Building Official is requiring that the manufacturer of this building continue the fire-resistive membrane on the garage side to the full height of the Occupancy Separation with only penetrations permitted in Chapter 43.
