RE: Scott Contracting, Rifle Gravel Pit # 1
Patrick:
This letter is to advise you that I have reviewed File Number: MIPA-05-20-
8788, Rifle Gravel Pit # 1, located on I-70 Frontage Road, East of Mamm Creek
Road in Rifle. The following is my comments:
1. The Scott Contracting Rifle Gravel Pit # 1 shall have a Garfield
County assigned address and the address numbers shall be posted at
the entrance of the gravel pit. Due to other addresses on the I-70
Frontage Road, the potential address for the Gravel Pit could be
addressed off of neighboring properties and would mor e than likely be
a County Road 346 address. CRFR is concerned with the gravel pit
assigned a County Road 346 address. CRFR is concerned that if the
gravel pit is given County Road 346 address that an emergency at the
gravel pit could potentially add 7-10 minutes to our response time due
to a possible two-mile difference in similar address on County Road
326. Addresses are based on mile markers on the County Road, and
not actual geographic location.
CRFR is willing to work with Scott Contracting and Garfield County
to reach a workable solution to our concerns.
2. Scott Contracting representative Tony Roberts advised that they will
have a scale house/office along with two separate fuel tanks on
location. Tony advised that the company follows industr y standards
with the fuel tanks (750 gallons and 3000 gallons) which are both
designed for containment. The large 3000-gallon fuel tank will have
berm and liner containment. They also follow industry standards on
fire extinguishers on the crusher and in the office. I see no need to
require additional fire extinguishers as long as industry standards are
followed.
Colorado River Fire Rescue
3. Mr. Roberts added that a water truck will be staged at the site for dust
control in the gravel pit and a water pond will be used to supply the
water.
CRFR believes that this water supply will be adequate for fire
suppression if needed.
I have no further requirements or concerns with this gravel pit and crushing
operation proposed in the referral. This gravel operation may only add minor
impacts to CRFR or our response to that area.
Thank you for allowing me to review this referral and please feel free to contact
me with any questions or concerns.
Thank You,
Orrin D. Moon, Prevention Division Chief/Fire Marshal
